Hi, I'm new in the forum, writing to you from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm looking for some advice for a new Head Unit for a VW Golf Mk6.
I've been reading a lot through the Forum but I'm still unclear on which is the most complete and performing Brand/Unit. I'm almost convinced about the Newsmy CarPad III (NR5261 -H-H0) but I still have some doubts and wanted to see if you have more experience or recommendations.
The Options I've been looking at:
- Newsmy CarPad III (NR5261 -H-H0) (8" 2GB RAM / 32GB ROM Android 4.4)
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/produc ... 0.0.uOFtKQ
- Joying JY-VL130N2 (8" 2GB RAM/ 32GB ROM Android 5.1)
https://www.carjoying.com/head-unit/s-v ... -obd2.html
- Eonon GA6153F (8" 1GB RAM / 16GB ROM Android 5.1)
https://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-GPS/V ... l?Catype=1
- Avin Avant-2 (8" 1GB RAM Android 4.1.1)
https://avinusa.com/vw-8-avant2-full-an ... ystem.html
- Pumpkin (8" 1GB RAM/ 12GB ROM Android 5.1)
http://www.autopumpkin.co.uk/android-ca ... s-dab.html
I believe those are the key players, not sure if I missed one.
So the key features I'm looking for, other than the standard features like GPS, Bluetooth, MP3 Player, Radio are:
- MFD / LCD Display Integration
- MicroSD Card Slot
- Rear Cam Trajectory
- CanBus integration, vehicle information display
- I'd prefer to have hardware buttons and not only soft ones.
I see the different options go from Android 4.1 to 6.1, does this make a real difference?
Which of these options is better built?
Which one provides better support?
Do all of them support Custom Roms?
Any recommendation or suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Lucas

Re: Best VW Head Unit
Hi Lucas!
I am using the cardpad 3: MFD integration is working for MK6, it has a MicroSD slot, Canbus works, it has hardware buttons and rearcam is working - BUT the lines are not moving as this is a camera / canbus feature my car doesnt support.
But the biggest advantage for me is the 2GB RAM (what the Joying device has too) - that make the box to a real sprinter
I cant see a real advantage of the operation system versioning (addionally, there are a lot of fake versions around)... - all needed apps work fluently!

Hi Cardroid, thanks for the reply.
Have you seen the new Carpad 4? I was supporised it's only got 1 GB RAM and no MicroSD slot.

Re: Best VW Head Unit
Well - Summer is out for maternity leave
But yes, the weak 1GB is confirmed - therefore I would stick to the carpad 3 in that case... 1 Gig is really not much and you will need 2 GB if you want to do some dashcam stuff...

Re: Best VW Head Unit
Another brand I found browsing is Audiosources and one nice feature I saw there that didn't see in any other is the capability of connecting the head unit to the original car bluetooth, that would be nice.
Any experience there?

Re: Best VW Head Unit
Look at these options https://www.bestadvisers.co.uk/best-car-dvd-players, there are compared several devices from different manufacturers. But be prepared for the fact that they pretty much overheat if in the car there is not cool due to the air conditioner. Constant video playback or GPS track will warm the device, and, therefore it is charging, then overheating is assured. In addition, the sun often falls on those places where it is usually fastened. So prepare for some troubles)
